Assisting Someone with Dementia:
Environmental & Communication Strategies (Level 1)

Providers develop an understanding of the gradual cognitive decline which characterizes dementia, learn different techniques and strategies for effective communication, explore environmental modifications to enhance comprehension and task performance, and develop a clear understanding and value of a consistent daily schedule.

Assisting Someone with Dementia:
Assessing Caregiver Interactions (Level 2)

Providers will evaluate more specific situations and identify strategies for interacting in the moment. They also learn specific questions to help in assessing a given situation and develop successful individualized communication strategies to minimize distress.

Assisting Someone with Dementia:
Distressing Behaviors Occurring Spontaneously and During Tasks (Level 3)

Providers will focus on difficult behaviors during activities of daily living by talking about why they occur and learning how to help someone in a way that is more comfortable and pleasant for both the person and the caregiver. Providers will discuss cognitive abilities, emotional reactions and responses to tasks and situations and how they reflect brain changes.

Adult Abuse & Neglect Prevention
This training creates a culture of understanding and respect for all individuals. Providers learn how to identify abuse environments and how to change them, how to report suspected abuse & neglect, how to diffuse possible abuse situations, and stop stress triggers and prevent themselves from abusing. Providers also enhance their interpersonal skills and achieve personal empowerment.

Stress Management & Self Determination
Providers learn their own physical and emotional signs of stress, time management skills and self care. They also review the role & impact of humor in stressful environments. Providers also learn how to identify skills required to make decisions and develop a preliminary life plan.

American Red Cross certified trainers teach basic first aid and CPR certifications.

Providers learn safe techniques for lifting & transferring, back safety and practice their techniques and positioning skills.

Home Skills Enhancement, Module 1: The Culture of Cleaning
Providers review how to understand and communicate with Consumers with diverse cultural backgrounds with the goal of learning how the person likes to have their house cleaned.

Home Skills Enhancement, Module 2: Meal Planning, Shopping and Food Safety
Providers review the food guide pyramid, learn shopping strategies, how to determine food preferences and identify and problem solve other challenges. They review the importance of healthy and safe meals through applying basic principles of food safety and evaluate ones own nutritional status and hygienic habits in the kitchen.

Consumers as Employers
This new series of trainings for Consumers will guide individuals in defining their needs in a personal assistant and assessing a good fit. They will learn techniques & proper processes for interview, hiring and termination, if needed. They will also review good communication skills as a supervisor.

Chronic Disease and Pain
This class provides information about chronic conditions such as heart disease, lung disease and diabetes. Major signs and symptoms and how they affect a Consumer's ability to complete activities of daily living are discussed . Providers learn about different types of pain, and how to assess if a Consumer is in pain, including important signs and symptoms to report.

Communications and Problem Solving, Session One: Active Listening & Self-Management
The Coaching Approach to Communications -with its key skills of self-awareness, self-management, active listening, and constructive feedback- provides the tools for creating and sustaining respectful and positive relationships. These skills can be used with the consumers you work with, at home and on any job.

Mental Health and Aging
This interactive workshop addresses the promotion of mental health in late life, supporting older adults with serious mental illness, and how to recognize signs that indicate the person's health may be deteriorating. Participants identify ways to interact more effectively with older adults with mental illness and how to reduce provider stress and burnout by practicing self-care.
